Seniors Living With A Purpose!

TWELVE THINGS ALL SENIORS CAN DO

Seniors are a unique group of people who can exert great influence on their church or community for God. It doesn’t cost much, but it can be very effective. Think about the following twelve things any senior can do.

WE CAN:

1. WE CAN pray for our pastor instead of criticizing him.

2. WE CAN volunteer to serve in the nursery or on a committee.

3. WE CAN do a kind deed for a neighbor in trouble or who is lonely.

4. WE CAN quit complaining about the music or church and help others get adjusted.

5. WE CAN write a note or an e-mail to a missionary or a shut-in today.

6. WE CAN invite a neighbor to attend church with us next week.

7. WE CAN be a happy greeter at the church door.

8. WE CAN give generously to God’s work at the church.

9. WE CAN attend prayer meeting and encourage younger people to do so also.

10. WE CAN give the pastor or someone a compliment today.

11. WE CAN prepare a Christmas Box for the Angel Tree or Samaritan’s Purse.

12. WE CAN enjoy God and glorify Him.

                                                                     ___ I strongly agree ___ I disagree

If you disagree with any of these items, pray about it and see what God says to do.

LARGO SENIOR ADULT RALLY GREAT SUCCESS

More than 85 seniors gathered at the Largo Alliance Church on September 14 for the second area rally. Enthusiasm was running high and the many comments listed on the Comment Sheet were very encouraging, and there was not even one complaint! Whew! We’re really doing something right, don’t you think? Rev. William Austin brought a great message of hope and challenge and everyone was blessed. Several people spent some time at the altar. Our churches will be better because of this gathering and that is what counts. After all, Jesus is not willing that anyone should perish. Can we be less concerned? Almost everyone stayed for the afternoon seminar following lunch and went away with some ideas on how to serve better. The next rally will be announced for the southern part of our district, so stay in touch and enjoy these times of encouraging seniors in these important years of our lives.

TRINITY COLLEGE VICE PRESIDENT ATTENDS RALLY

Dr. Bill Lanpher and the Director of Development, Mel Carter, visited with us at the rally. Dr. Lanpher gave us a birdseye view of the college and invited everyone to stop by the college for a visit. 13 people took up his invitation and stopped for a tour following the rally. Everyone can join in praying for him and the student body which now numbers over 160. Their goal is 200 by next year!

THINK ABOUT THIS:

Some see retirement as the sunset of life; I see it as the dawning of a new opportunity.

SENIORS TO HAVE PRIME BILLING AT CHURCH MINISTRIES CONFERENCE!

For the first time, seniors will have a very special place at the Church Ministries Conference to be held at First Alliance Church Orlando on November 11 beginning at 9:00 a.m. Two seminars of great interest will be offered for seniors. Rev. Joe Burchill, Director of Christian Education and Senior Ministries for the Western Pennsylvania District will be the featured speaker at the 9:00 a.m. plenary session. In addition, he will lead a very important seminar in the morning at 11:15 a.m. on the subject: "Senior Ministries In The Local Church." In the afternoon at 1:40 p.m., Rev. Anthony Bollback will lead the second seminar on the subject "Creative Approaches To Spark Your Senior Ministries." This is your opportunity to get involved at no cost to yourself other than your noon lunch to be served at the church. Each church pays a registration fee for an unlimited number of people from their church to attend. Now that’s a bargain! I have set a goal of 100 seniors attending the conference! Are you with me? Then, let’s turn out and make a difference.

BOOST YOUR BRAIN POWER

The Humana Active Outlook publication included the following item recently. Did you know that exercise is good for your mind as well as your body? Researches at Scripps College in Claremont, California, tested memory, reaction time and reasoning for a group of 62 exercisers between the ages of 55 and 91. They tested an equal number of people in the same age range who didn’t exercise. The result? Exercisers performed significantly better in reaction-time tests, reasoning tests and two of the three memory tests!

That sounds like an easy way to live happier lives. Add church attendance, prayer and meditation and you could live to be 100 and live an active, meaningful life.

NO SENIOR LINK IN OCTOBER

On October 5, Evelyn and I leave for Honolulu, Hawaii to participate in the 50th anniversary of Kapahulu Bible Church where we pastored for a little more than six years. From there we will continue on to Hong Kong to visit our son Jim and his wife Alice. He serves as pastor of the International Alliance Church in Hong Kong.

While there I will preach once again at the morning service of the church, speak to a couple’s retreat, preach at the Filipino church the church sponsors. Evelyn will be speaking at the AWANA program for children and parents.

We will also make a trip back into China to the city of Wuhan where we lived for two years when we first began our missionary careers. The old mission house we lived in has been razed to make room for the growing Central China Seminary of more than 200 students and a new 1,000 seat auditorium and administration building. To learn more about the exciting things God is doing in China these days, request your copy of CHINA CLIPPINGS or look it up on our web site.

We will return to Honolulu for preaching at the church on October 29 and home to Kissimmee on October 30. Please pray for us that we will be strengthened for these many ministries and anointed by the Holy Spirit to preach the Word. As soon as possible, the November SENIOR LINK will tell you all about the trip and what we observed of the church in China and Hong Kong.

FIFTH BOOK RELEASED IN THE JACK AND JENNY MYSTERY SERIES

Toccoa Falls College Press just released the fifth book in the Jack and Jenny Mystery series called "The Tiger Shark Strikes Again." It is another thriller taking place in Hong Kong. Sizzling Seniors!

All over this State and in every Alliance church there are seniors who are retired, but who keep on serving God with all their hearts. I need your help in highlighting some of these people from month to month. Just send me the facts about the person of your choice and watch for a report
right here in this paper.

Ralph and Ruth Herber

Our Sizzling Seniors this month are Ralph and Ruth Herber of Hope Community Church in Jacksonville, Florida where they reside. They left for France and language study in 1947 and then spent 8 terms in West Africa ministering to the Suppyire Senoufo people in the Sikasso District. They were engaged in Bible translation work, language analysis, literature development, planting churches, building chapels and organizing medical clinics. They also were responsible to reorganize and direct the Ntorrosso Bible School. They retired from Mali in 1984 and became Missionaries in Residence at Crown College for a year and a half. Ruth is the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. R. S. Roseberry, one of the Alliance pioneers of Africa and former Field Chairman. Ruth has written the biography of her parents called "Crossing Frontiers For Christ." This fascinating missionary story is available from them for $10.00 plus postage.

They presently serve at Hope Church in various capacities and wherever needed. Their French language skills is opening many doors to Haitian ministries today. They have taught a seminar to Alliance Haitian pastors in the Miami area on "Alliance History and Doctrine" and received a very enthusiastic response from them. They are presently deeply involved with the Billy Graham Crusade in Jacksonville to be held November 2-5. Ralph is presently teaching "The Christian Life Witness" course to Haitians in preparation for counseling ministries at the crusade. He also serves on the Campaign Multi-language Committee. These contacts have led to inquiries from Haitian pastors about affiliation with the C&MA. This couple have served several churches as interim pastor and continue as supply speaker frequently. They are regular attendees at the Senior Conferences at Lake Swan and give strong support to this ministry.

You can see why these seniors were selected this month! Active for God no matter where He plants them! God bless you, Ralph and Ruth.

Do you have someone you would like to nominate for this prestigious award? Let me hear from you so we can all be encouraged to use our years wisely. Many thanks.

SPOTLIGHT ON FRIENDS OF THE ALLIANCE AT GOOD SAMARITAN VILLAGE

Did you know that there are about 150 Alliance people living at the Good Samaritan Village in Kissimmee from all over the United States? This large community of Alliance people take a very active part in the Village Church where Alliance pastor Dr. Keith Copeland serves as senior pastor. He is assisted by Dr. Tim Nordstrom, a Covenant pastor. Both of these pastors receive the highest praise from the Alliance community and actively participate in all kinds of activities at the church and in the community.

Approximately 20 sing in the church choir which is led by Rev. Forest Mangham with Alice Mosura at the piano. Many of our Alliance residents provide special music for all church programs and volunteer for work at the church office, the Community Center and the Wellness Center. Some take a very active part in the morning TV Breakfast club by singing and playing the piano, while others read the Village newspaper called the Quadrangle on the closed circuit TV for shut-ins and nursing home patients. Others teach a Wednesday morning Bible class, speak at the Nursing Home worship services, serve as Deacons on the church board and Village committees and strongly support the Wednesday night Prayer Meeting.

Every quarter they meet together for lunch and a special program to keep them abreast of Alliance happenings in the Southeastern District. Our superintendent, Dr. Mark O’Farrell and our Assistant superintendent have both spoken at the quarterly meetings. Gordon Swenson will be the next guest speaker at the meeting on October 19 in the Community Center dining room beginning at 11:15 a.m. Rev. and Mrs. Emerson Ross who live at Lady Lake, Florida will be providing the special music. This will be a great opportunity to learn more about Lake Swan Camp and the Senior Adult Conference to be held there February 6-11, 2001.

If you want to meet a group of very happy people with a purpose, come and visit the seniors at Good Samaritan.

THINGS TO GET INVOLVED IN

1. Pray for revival. Request your copy of ASTIR from The Woerner Foundation. 5505 South Flagler Drive, Suite 6606, West Palm Beach. FL 33401. This is edited by Rev. Paul Radford.

2. Attend the Central Florida Seniors Crusade on October 20 at The First Baptist Church of Central Florida, 800 N. Pine Hills Road, Orlando at 10:30 a.m. and enjoy the Blue Ridge Singers. This is especially for seniors. This is a united effort of churches in the greater Orlando area. Four Alliance churches participated in the last Crusade meeting in March when more than 800 seniors gathered together for a great time of blessing and fellowship.

3. Select a church planter in your area and take a special interest in him and the church he is starting. Pray for him and his family. Take a delegation for a visit to the church some Sunday and encourage them with warm bodies! Be grandma or grandpa to his children. Get blessed by giving yourself to encourage a lonely pastor.

4. Men, join the Alliance Men’s Retreat at Lake Swan, November 3-5.

5. Enlist people for our Senior Adult Ministries. Twelve people requested to be put on the SENIOR LINK mailing list at the last rally. Nine of them had never seen a copy of this monthly newsletter. Print out this SENIOR LINK and make sure every senior in your congregation receives a copy. Ask your pastor to circulate it.

HELP SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT SENIOR ADULT MINISTRIES

Either print up copies of this news letter yourself, or ask your pastor to print and circulate it for all the seniors in the church as well as your senior friends outside of the church. Use this as a tool to reach out and touch someone with the Good News. Make it the goal of your senior group to see that every senior in the church receives a copy of this report. Please send me the e-mail addresses of every senior in your church. (55 plus people)

As we look ahead to the fall season, begin making plans to establish a Senior Adult Ministry in every district church. Here are some things to do:

1) pray that more people will be reached and brought in.

2) plan some event and invite your senior friends to attend.

3) work with your pastor and encourage him as he seeks to reach more seniors.

4) make a special effort to speak to a senior every week about Jesus.

5) witness in the power of the Spirit and leave the rest to God.

A Senior Adult Ministry only needs two people to get started. Using the above formula, it will soon grow because God answers prayer. Try it. It works.

AVAILABLE FOR SENIOR GATHERINGS

Since accepting the ministry of coordinator for Senior Adult Ministries
for the Southeastern District, I am no longer involved as an interim
pastor. That means both my wife and I have time to visit your church for
your senior meeting or other events. Before summer arrives, I hope to
have some regional senior gatherings in strategic locations of the district to help strengthen and encourage this growing ministry. Your special prayer support will be most appreciated.
